| Friday, January 27, 1939 -- AAC 1st Lt. Benjamin Kelsey makes the first flight of the Lockheed XP-38 at March Field, Calif.
| | Wednesday, January 27, 1943 -- The first American air raid on Germany is made by Eighth Air Force B-17 crews against Wilhelmshaven and other targets in the northwestern part of the country.
| | Friday, January 27, 1967 -- A routine prelaunch test for NASA's Apollo 1 turned fatal when a fire ripped through the spacecraft's crew cabin, claiming the lives of Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee.
| | Wednesday, January 29, 1930 -- Beginning Jan. 8, Maj. Ralph Royce leads mass flight of AAC pilots flying Curtiss P-1C Hawks from Selfridge Field, Mich., to Spokane, Wash., and back in severe winter weather to gain experience for Arctic flying & is awarded the Mackay Trophy.
| | Friday, January 30, 1948 -- Orville Wright dies in his hometown of Dayton, Ohio, at age 76.
| | Tuesday, January 31, 1950 -- President Truman announces that he has directed the Atomic Energy Commission “to continue its work on all forms of atomic-energy weapons, including the so-called hydrogen or super bomb.” This is the first confirmation of US H-bomb work.
| | Friday, January 31, 1958 -- Explorer I, the first US satellite, is launched by the Army at Cape Canaveral, Fla. Launched on a Jupiter-C rocket, it will play a key role in discovering the Van Allen radiation belt.
| | Tuesday, January 31, 1961 -- A chimpanzee named Ham is launched atop a Redstone booster from Cape Canaveral Missile Test Annex, Fla., in a test of the Mercury manned capsule.
